How extensions work
Extensions fit one on each side of the gate, and the size listed is per side. So a pair of 20cm extensions adds 40cm in total, not 20cm.
Working out what you need
- Measure your opening at its narrowest point, wall to wall
- Check your gate's adjustment range (Small fits 65–74cm, Large fits 75–84cm)
- Add the extension width twice — once for each side
Worked example
A Small gate (65–74cm) with a pair of 20cm extensions:
- 65 + 20 + 20 = 105cm minimum
- 74 + 20 + 20 = 114cm maximum
So that combination covers openings from 105cm to 114cm.
Quick reference — Small gate (65–74cm)
| Extension per side | Fits openings |
|---|---|
| None | 65–74cm |
| 10cm | 85–94cm |
| 20cm | 105–114cm |
| 30cm | 125–134cm |
| 45cm | 155–164cm |
Maximum width with extensions is 164cm.
Before you order — check your mounting surfaces
Our gate is pressure-mounted, which means it holds by tension rather than screws. It needs a solid, flat and structurally sound surface on both sides to press against.
- A standard wall or a substantial newel post works well
- A glass balustrade panel is not suitable — it isn't designed to take sustained sideways pressure
If one side of your opening is a balustrade, check that the gate would press against the metal post rather than the glass itself.
Where to fit a pressure gate
Pressure-mounted gates are ideal at the bottom of stairs and in doorways.
They are not recommended at the top of a staircase, as they can shift if a child leans or falls against them. For the top of stairs, a hardware-mounted gate that screws into place is the safer choice.
